The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, announced the termination of dozens of grants related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) by the U.S. Department of Education. DOGE revealed that 29 DEI training grants worth $101 million were scrapped, along with 89 additional contracts totaling $881 million. The move aligns with President Trump's efforts to scale back DEI initiatives, following an executive order that labeled such programs 'illegal and immoral'.
WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 21: The US Department of Education building is seen on August 21, 2024 in Washington, DC.
The 29 "DEI training grants" totaled $101 million altogether, DOGE wrote in an X post. One grant was designed to train teachers how to "help students understand / interrogate the complex histories involved in oppression, and help students recognize areas of privilege and power on an individual and collective basis," according to the presidential advisory committee.
Crisis in the Classroom reached out to the Department of Education for comment on the terminated contracts, but did not immediately receive a response. The moves followed an executive order by Trump seeking to eliminate DEI programs from federal agencies. The president in the order called such efforts "illegal and immoral."
