Elon Musk's DOGE, a White House team focused on reducing government spending and regulation, is reportedly targeting the U.S. Department of Education. DOGE representatives are working within the department to cut costs and staff, and the Trump administration is preparing an executive order to potentially dismantle the agency entirely. Lawsuits have been filed against the Treasury Department over DOGE's access to a sensitive payment system.

The U.S. Department of Education is reportedly the next target of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency ( DOGE ), an Elon Musk -led White House team tasked with reducing government regulation and spending.Approximately 20 individuals from DOGE are working within the Department of Education, focused on cutting costs and staff, according to The Washington Post, citing three anonymous sources and obtained records.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that DOGE representatives are operating from the Department of Education building, with sources indicating that DOGE is targeting the agency as a prime candidate for its efforts to streamline bureaucracy. However, the Trump administration has even more ambitious plans for the department, established by Congress in 1979. Both publications report that the administration is preparing an executive order aimed at completely dismantling the agency.According to The Journal, officials are debating an executive order that 'would shut down all functions of the agency that aren't written explicitly into statute or move certain functions to other departments,' and would also 'call for developing a legislative proposal to abolish the department,' according to individuals familiar with the situation. The timing and specific details are still under negotiation. As the agency was created by Congress, it can only be fully eliminated through Congressional action, as stated by The Post.Musk expressed his belief on his platform X Monday night that U.S. President Donald Trump's efforts to fully abolish the Department of Education 'will succeed.' Trump campaigned on the promise to eliminate the Department of Education, and this priority was also included in the Heritage Foundation's 'Project 2025' policy proposals. 'They want to destroy public education,' wrote Alejandra Caraballo, an instructor at Harvard Law School Cyberlaw Clinic, in response to The Post's reporting.Since Trump's inauguration, Musk and his DOGE associates have acted swiftly to gain influence over multiple government agencies. Last week, DOGE dismissed officials at the U.S. Agency for International Development, and earlier this week Musk declared his intention to shut it down entirely. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Monday that he is now in control of the agency. DOGE representatives were also granted access to a Treasury Department payment system that processes trillions of dollars in financial transactions and holds personal financial data on millions of Americans. Two unions and an advocacy group filed a lawsuit against Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and the Treasury Department in federal court Monday, citing privacy concerns regarding DOGE's access to the system.
