The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk, has canceled over $100 million in grants dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training within the Department of Education (DOE). DOGE argues that these programs are 'wasteful' and 'divisive,' promoting ideological conformity instead of true equity. This move reflects a larger trend of scrutinizing DEI initiatives in educational institutions, with some colleges closing their DEI offices in response to pressure from the government.
The Department of Education (DOE) is taking action to curtail spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion ( DEI ) initiatives. As part of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE)'s ongoing effort to identify and eliminate 'wasteful' expenditures, over $100 million in grants dedicated to DEI training have been canceled. DOGE, led by Elon Musk , announced the termination of 89 DOE contracts totaling $881 million in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday night.
Of this substantial amount, DOGE singled out $101 million allocated for DEI training programs. These programs aimed to equip educators with the tools to guide students in understanding and critically examining historical injustices, including recognizing individual and collective privilege and power dynamics. Musk, in his X post, highlighted the expenditure with the comment, 'Your tax dollars were spent on this,' referring to the DOE's spending on DEI training. DOGE's scrutiny extends beyond DEI training. The department also identified another $1.5 million spent on a contractor tasked with 'observing mailing and clerical operations' at a mail center, which was also terminated. DOGE asserts that DEI was never truly about 'equity' but rather about enforcing ideological conformity and institutionalizing discrimination. They believe these canceled programs represent a victory for every student. Nicki Neily, president of Parents Defending Education, praised the spending cuts, stating that 'More states need to follow suit.' Erika Donalds, wife of Republican Representative Byron Donalds of Florida, chimed in, expressing concern that 'the kids can’t read,' in response to the DOE's focus on DEI initiatives. This development follows a pattern of DOGE's efforts to scrutinize and reduce spending within the DOE. In early February, DOGE terminated three grants, including one funding an institution that had previously hosted faculty workshops on 'Decolonizing the Curriculum.' This recent action echoes a broader trend of scrutinizing DEI teachings in educational institutions. President Donald Trump, during his administration, initiated a federal review of DEI teachings and practices in institutions receiving federal funding. In response to this pressure, several colleges, such as Missouri State University and West Virginia University, have taken steps to close their DEI offices. This ongoing debate over the role and implementation of DEI in education continues to generate significant discussion and controversy
