A four-year-old lab mix named Armando was found tied up in the parking lot of an Arizona Humane shelter in Phoenix with a heartbreaking note from his family. The note explained that due to unforeseen circumstances, they had no choice but to leave him at the shelter. Armando is a friendly dog who is up-to-date on his shots but may need them soon. He is prone to ear infections.
Arizona Humane Society says his story highlights the Maricopa County animal welfare crisis, which is at an all-time high. In 2024, AHS cared for more than 22,000 sick, injured and abused pets, the most in a decade. The organization attributes the crisis to population growth, rising home prices, evictions and a shortage of affordable pet care. Now, Armando is looking for a forever home. He's been treated for an ear infection, but otherwise is healthy. AHS says he can be a bit nervous at first but quickly warms up with pets (and treats) and loves getting attention from his human friends.
