The superstar comedian is expanding his entertainment empire in hopes of bringing more tourism to his hometown of Nashville.
He may call himself “The Greatest Average American,” but there’s nothing average about Nate Bargatze’s growing entertainment empire.airing on ABC and streaming on Hulu, the stand-up superstar is expanding far beyond the stage, and possibly into theme park territory.
But before anyone assumes he’s coming for Dolly Parton’s crown, Bargatze is quick to set the record straight. “No, we want to be with Dolly Parton,” Bargatze told PauseRewind’s entertainment reporter Courtney Tezeno. “I mean, Dollywood is such a special Dollywood has been rated the number one park. I mean, I've been in Dollywood. It's an amazing, amazing thing, park.” American singer and songwriter Dolly Parton poses for a portrait with her guitar at Dollywood circa 1993 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Instead of competition, Bargatze sees collaboration and opportunity to put Tennessee as an even bigger hot spot. “My first job was at Opryland,” he shared. “So I just also wanted to create, you know, so you come to the city, you also do have this other thing that you can go to Hopefully, we can have a couple parks and a lot of places you can go do and have completely different experiences.” The entrance to Dollywood is viewed on October 18, 2016 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Located near the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this tourist resort community is home to Dollywood and other entertainment and roadside attractions. “I love Nashville. I love being, you know, it's your family, friends, everybody you know is from there,” he said. “I'm very invested in the state of Tennessee and Nashville, and I want to continue to grow. And this game show is a big reason I want people to want to come to Nashville, to come be on this game show.” Nate Bargatze poses in the press room during the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards on January 05, 2025 in Beverly Hills, California. That hometown pride fuels “The Greatest Average American,” a game show concept born from one of his jokes in a Netflix special. “I would jokingly always call myself that, that I know all the average American things,” he explained. “And so I wanted to make a game show that kind of celebrates that it's fun, it's silly, it's like, you know, weird little questions that you wonder.”“I don't know what the challenge is before we go in I'd rather just go in and not know. Don't tell me what it is,” he said. “If it's going to my first answer is probably going to be the dumb one. So like, let it be the dumb one.”Family remains his north star. Raised by a magician father and a quick-witted mom, he credits both for his comedic timing. Now, as a husband to wife Laura and a girl dad, he’s careful about what material makes it to the stage. “I don't ever want to surprise someone in my family,” Bargatze said. “I always want them to be aware.” When asked if he’s ready to retire from stand-up, he set the record straight on his future in comedy. “I love stand-up more than anything,” he said. “I think I'll know. I'll know when I know,” that it's time to call it quits. Until then, fans can catch him traveling across the country for his “Big Dumb Eyes” tour.
