A new documentary explores the poignant relationship between a North Macedonian farmer and an injured stork, highlighting the impact of climate change, economic hardship, and family separation in a rural community.

The documentary film returns to its North Macedonia home in crafting the portrait of 60-year-old Nikola Conev, a hardworking farmer struggling to keep his family afloat amid harsh environmental conditions and government intervention. The film powerfully addresses universal concerns surrounding climate change 's impact and the brutal economic realities faced by rural communities .

However, its most distinctive aspect – the bond developing between Nikola, after his family leaves for better opportunities abroad, and the film’s titular wounded stork – offers a hopeful perspective. Kotevska and her frequent collaborator, cinematographer Jean Dakar, began by studying storks' migration patterns and their increased reliance on landfills. This research led them to the human world, as the storks, dependent on farms, have suffered in parallel with humans due to environmental changes. The official environmental organization of North Macedonia provided the filmmakers with a map of stork nests, and years were spent tracking the birds. The documentary is characterized by intimate shots of the storks, contrasting their timeless beauty with modernity. The storks seem unfazed by cameras and drones. Dakar notes that they filmed three generations of storks, taking advantage of the birds' familiarity with their presence and equipment, allowing them to get closer. The entire filming process spanned about three years, primarily unfunded initially, with Kotevska and Dakar relying on their mutual dedication. They would live in their van for months, immersed in the wilderness, self-funding the project for a period before securing outside support. The film then gradually formalized its structure, leading the filmmakers to Nikola, whose daughter and son-in-law depart for Germany. Following this, Nikola's wife joins them to assist with childcare, a scene subtly conveying the family's changing circumstances. Dakar describes breaking the barrier with Nikola and his wife through spending time with them, making the collaboration natural and organic. The relationship mirrored the rapport built with the storks. Kotevska highlights the family’s willingness to show their struggles, including the family separation due to government issues. In gorgeous close-ups, we see a solitary Nikola lovingly nurse Silyan the stork back to health, rediscovering his own sense of purpose along that journey. Kotevska remembers one day of shooting as a kind of “miracle,” when Dakar captured a flock of storks flying off a landfill and onto Nikola’s land in real time after spotting Silyan. The hopeful image calls back to when Nikola first found Silyan injured in a landfill. Dakar emphasizes that the film showcases only a fraction of the extensive research and observation involved in understanding the animals' behavior. Ninety percent of the process involved researching and studying the animals, which included observing their behavior and feeding times. Dakar states that he loved this aspect of the filming process
