Authorities are on the lookout for a wolf hybrid that’s reportedly on the loose on the outskirts of Sebastopol.

Police said they received a call from the California Fish and Wildlife Department on Sunday morning regarding the animal, which was last spotted wandering “south of the Highway 12 bridge on the eastern edge of town.” The sighting prompted a multi-agency effort to track down the wolf, which is described as dark gray or black in coloring with yellow eyes, but experts had not yet located it as of Sunday afternoon. “If spotted, DO NOT APPROACH,” the Sebastopol Police Department wrote in a statement.

First-generation wolf hybrids are illegal to own, according to the Fish and Wildlife Department, and though no state permit is required to possess a first-generation wolf hybrid’s descendants, certain cities and counties may prohibit possession or require a permit. People who see the animal are encouraged to call North Bay Animal Services at 707-762-6227, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife at 707-428-2002 or the Sebastopol Police Department at 707-829-4400.
