A software engineer but really a musician and a writer.

Big-budget franchise revivals don’t usually fade quietly. When a studio spends years developing a legacy sequel, there is a certain expectation from the audience. But sometimes, even a hyped up film struggles to find its footing when it tries to appeal to both longtime fans and a newer audience at the same time.

The title in question has faced the same struggles at the box office at the time of its release, and is now suddenly riding waves on streaming. This is about one of Disney’s most ambitious sci-fi projects, built on a cult legacy that arrived with sleek visuals and a dense digital mythology. Soon after its release, critics were divided, audiences were selective, and international box office interest cooled way faster than expected. Outside the U.S., the film gradually slipped out of weekly charts and underperformed at the box office, concluding its theatrical run with approximately $142 million worldwide against an estimated production budget of $180–$220 million. Now the streaming picture looks broader and a lot different. Tron: Ares is holding a consistent Top 10 footprint on Disney+ across multiple markets, most notably the U.S., and has stayed in-range all week, ending back at #6 today, with strong week-long stability in places like Hong Kong and Taiwan . At the same time, it’s showing paid-demand traction: on the Apple TV Store, it’s been remarkably steady in France at the #3–4 range on average, and it also pops into the Top 10 in additional countries on specific days. On Rakuten TV, it’s charting across several European markets: Spain repeatedly in the Top 10, Italy appearing multiple days, and Ukraine at #10, indicating a title that’s not just back on one platform but circulating across subscription and rental/purchase charts in different regions. 'Tron: Ares' Director's Next Film Signals Momentum Beyond Disney’s Franchise Machine Joachim Rønning isn’t letting one franchise define his lane. Even with Tron: Ares keeping his name in the blockbuster conversation, his next step is a sharp pivot: a sea-set survival thriller called Here Be Monsters. The upcoming thriller, therefore, is built around a skill set he’s already proven: strong suspense hooks around sea-based stories. There's Kon-Tiki, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and The Young Woman and the Sea, and every single time Rønning has shown he can stage scale and survival pressure in ocean environments without losing clarity. And the business side underlines that this isn’t a small side quest. Paramount Pictures acquired the project at auction, with Scott Free Productions producing — Ridley Scott, Michael Pruss, and Rebecca Feuer. Rønning co-wrote it with his brother Andreas Rønning, and the latest revisions came from Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue.
