The Boy and the Heron was produced by Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animated studio based in Tokyo, and was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The 2023 fantasy film received a lot of attention during the 2024 awards season, so it's not surprising that it took home Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards.
Disney & Pixar Have Lost The Best Animated Feature Oscar 2 Years In A Row Close Pixar's Elemental was one of the five movies nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, and, as mentioned above, it lost to The Boy and the Heron. Meanwhile, Pixar's Turning Red received a nod in the category at the previous Oscars in 2023, but the film lost to Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
