The Greyhounds face Sunnyvale on Friday in a Class 4A state semifinal at the Alamodome.
BOERNE — Riding on the bus back from Kingsville on Saturday, Boerne senior guard Jamie Ruede was comforted when she spotted the Alamodome.A few hours earlier, the Greyhounds had earned a trip there when they defeated rival Fredericksburg 49-40 for the Region IV-4A championship at Texas A&M-Kingsville.
Getting to play at the Alamodome will be a treat for five Greyhounds who reached the state semifinals in 2021. Because of the pandemic, UIL didn’t stage a standard state tournament with semifinals and finals over a three-day span. Instead, only the finals were played at the Alamodome.As a result, Boerne traveled to Houston’s Delmar Fieldhouse, where the Greyhounds lost 73-54 to Hardin-Jefferson in the 4A state semifinals.
The Greyhounds appeared to be state-bound last season before a buzzer-beating layup off a steal handed Fredericksburg a 47-46 victory.“There were so many things that could have been done at the time, but you know, it’s what helped us get here now,” Aaron said.“It was the disappointment of knowing that we could have gone and done something special,” Ruede said of last year’s regional final.
“It was a lot of playoff-style basketball with many different caliber of teams with different skill sets,” Aaron said. “I really enjoy playing teams that challenge us athletically, on skills, from the perimeter, inside — all of the above. We played teams that challenged us.”“It was really hard for us to not look ahead and focus on the 1-0 every day,” Aaron said. “We knew this is where we wanted to be and where we could be, and our potential was there. It was tough to stay in the moment.
