A wonderful and popular little life sim set in the Australian outback is making the leap from PC to Nintendo Switch soon, opening itself up to a new audience of fans. Dinkum recently released as a full game on Steam in April, after having been in early access since 2022, and has received very positive ratings on that platform.
But, as the Nintendo Switch has become the unofficial home for cozy games in recent years, it was only a matter of time before Dinkum joined the Switch family. Officially announced at this morning's Nintendo Direct, Dinkum will be launching on the Nintendo Switch with up to four-player multiplayer support, and even a special Switch-exclusive costume set. The game lets players build a town in the Aussie Outback by completing tasks, gathering resources, building and placing homes and businesses, and trying to stay alive. You may even learn a little about Australia's unique charms and its flora and fauna while you play. As Dinkum is one of my favorite little cozy games, I was excited about the opportunity to interview Dinkum's solo developer, James Bendon, about the transition to the Nintendo Switch, and how the popularity of this little hobby project of his has affected his life. Dinkum Is Coming To Nintendo Switch This November Dev Hopes To Bring It To All Consoles Eventually, But Currently Focused On Switch And Steam Dinkum has been on Steam since it entered early access in 2022 and had its full launch last spring. The popular game has included several free events and updates over the years. Now, on November 6, 2025, Dinkum will launch on the Nintendo Switch with full support for touch controls and Joy-Cons. Graphics and controls have been optimized for Nintendo Switch performance, and it will feature up to four player multiplayer locally or using Nintendo Online. I asked developer James Bendon if there were plans to bring the game to other consoles as well. He responded, "I'm a huge Nintendo fan, and I think Dinkum is a great fit for the Switch. Although I'd love to have Dinkum come to all consoles eventually, right now we're very focused on the Switch and Steam versions." When asked if Dinkum will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, Bendon said, "In regards to the Switch 2, I can say that the Krafton and 5minlab team have shared some of their preparation for next gen platform support with me, but I can't share any specifics right now." Some Changes Were Made To Make It Feel Good On Switch Sadly, No Crossplay At Launch For Dinkum In order to make Dinkum feel right on the Nintendo Switch, Bendon said that the team at 5minlab, who helped him develop the Switch version, had to rework all the original rendering from the PC version to make sure it worked on Switch in both docked and handheld formats. Speaking on the changes for Switch, Bendon shared that, "one thing that surprised me when I've played the Switch was how good the HD rumble feels on the Joy-Cons." He also added that there were some changes made to the UI for handheld mode, and to make sure the controls work well with Nintendo's configuration. Bendon said, "In the end, the goal is to make sure that the game remains the same, but feels at home on the Switch." Sadly, although he says that crossplay features are under consideration, at launch, Dinkum on the Switch will only support local and online multiplayer within the Switch version itself. Developer James Bendon Says This Is A Dream Come True A Hobby Project Turned Successful Game Dinkum was Bendon's first experience with game development, and it started out as a simple hobby project. He said that, "seeing so many people enjoy my little game has been an incredible experience. I still get so much joy from reading about players' adventures in Dinkum, or hearing about the friendships they've made through the game. The community has been so supportive throughout Dinkum's lifetime and I feel very grateful for that." He added, "Before releasing Dinkum, I had two dreams: The first dream was Dinkum would be successful enough that I could continue working in game development. The second was that one day I'd see Dinkum on a Nintendo console. So, now, looking back, I feel very lucky that I've achieved both of these dreams." Currently, there are no plans for paid DLC for Dinkum, but Bendon added that he loves working on Dinkum and adding new items and features, so he hopes to continue providing free updates for fans.
