A recent wave of dine and dash incidents across the UK is leaving restaurants thousands of pounds out of pocket. This article explores the moral implications, rising cases, and potential link to the Cost of Living Crisis.
The idea of filling up our stomachs and sneaking out without settling the bill at a restaurant is morally objectionable to many of us, but establishments across the UK have seen a wave of dine and dash incidents over the last few months - and it’s leaving them thousands of pounds out of profit.
And while these cases may feel isolated, or few and far between, one Brit in every 20 has confessed to the crime in a survey published in 2018. It was a galling experience seeing it from this side and one that first brought up the question as to whether people simply don’t care anymore. And if now - over a decade later - the issue has gotten worse.
While a number of factors come into play - whether that’s the continued aftershocks of the pandemic, increasing food, electricity and gas bills, or rising business rates and rents - it doesn’t make the trend any less concerning. Just days earlier the chef shared his frustration after a number of diners had failed to show up at his restaurant the previous weekend. Though he didn’t name the diners in question, he took to social media at the time to shame a table of five who had failed to show up for a special chef’s table experience.
