The four law enforcement officers who were killed during a shootout in Charlotte, North Carolina were identified Tuesday.
Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas M. Weeks Jr., 48, assigned to the Western District of North Carolina, was among those murdered.
The release noted Weeks started his USMS career in 2011 in the District of Columbia's Superior Court before transferring to Charlotte in 2014. He previously spent eight years with Customs and Border Protection. said Sam Poloche and Alden Elliot were 14-year veterans of the department and had been assigned to the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force.
"They loved their work, and were passionate about their roles in protecting our communities," the department added.The U.S. Marshals Task Force was trying to serve a warrant to a convicted felon wanted for gun possession at around 1:30 p.m. Monday "when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject," CMPD said.
Initially, Jennings said three members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force were pronounced dead and four CMPD officers were shot. Officers later clarified one additional officer from an assisting agency was also shot, bringing the total of law enforcement officers involved in the shooting to eight.
