Diamondbacks shortstop Nick Ahmed, who has not played since May 15, is unsure when he can get back in action after testing positive for COVID-19.

Ahmed is not vaccinated, and he said the past two weeks did not make him wish he were, though he did not want to go into details on his thinking.Ahmed said the fever and chills passed after a few days, but he has continued to be bothered by migraines and fatigue and he said his lungs still don’t feel normal. He said there were a few days he wasn’t eating well, causing him to lose six or seven pounds. He hasn’t been able to work out.

Ahmed has not played since May 15. He is hitting .231/.259/.442 through 52 at-bats and has played his normally strong defense. Lovullo said bullpen coach Mike Fetters tested positive, as well, the second coach to come down with the illness this week, following first-base coach Dave McKay. Both have mild symptoms, Lovullo said.

Varsho was struck on the right shoulder by a 95 mph fastball by the Dodgers’ Ryan Pepiot in the first inning. X-rays and additional tests came back negative, Lovullo said, adding that the injury is being called a “right scapula contusion.”
