Justin Dhillon scores brace as San Antonio FC beats Rio Grande Valley FC
Austin FC plays San Antonio FC, in black jerseys, during a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup soccer match on Wednesday, April 20, 2022, at Toyota Field in San Antonio.Justin Dhillon notched San Antonio FC’s first two-goal game of the season, including an 87th-minute strike that proved to be decisive in a 3-2 win against Rio Grande Valley FC on Saturday at H-E-B Park in Edinburg.
Returning to action after last week’s scheduled match against Colorado Springs was postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within San Antonio’s organization, the club asserted its standing atop the Western Conference, moving to 9-2-0 with 27 points. Dhillon tallied the opening goal of the match in the 26th minute, tracking down a headed crossing pass near the edge of the 6-yard box and tucking it into the far side of the net.
RGV pulled even on a goal from Juan Cabezas in the 41st minute, but Mitchell Taintor put SAFC back in front in the 62nd. Elliot Collier sent a bouncing volley toward goal that was deflected by RGV keeper Tyler Deric, allowing Taintor to charge forward and hold off a challenge from an RGV defender long enough to touch the ball into the back of the net, falling across the goal line in the process.
Dhillon extended the margin to two in the 87th minute, making a run ahead of a pair of RGV FC defenders to receive a pass from Shannon Gomez in the middle of the penalty area. He touched the ball to his right to create a shooting angle and then pushed a shot past Deric. The teams stopped play and took a knee during the 21st minute of Saturday’s match in recognition of the lives lost in the school shooting in Uvalde.
