Fire authorities in Taiwan reported a devastating gas explosion at a department store on Thursday, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives and injuries to 26 individuals. The explosion occurred at the food court situated on the 12th floor of the prestigious Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung city. The impact of the blast was substantial, causing the higher floors of the upscale establishment to collapse, sending debris raining down onto pedestrians below.
Two casualties, identified as tourists from Macau, were confirmed by the Macao's Tourism Office. Reports indicate they were part of a family of seven who had traveled to Taiwan for tourism purposes. The remaining five family members also sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical attention at local hospitals in Taichung. While a portion of the store was undergoing renovation at the time of the incident, it remains unclear whether the construction work played a role in the explosion. Taichung Vice Mayor Cheng Chao-hsin addressed reporters at the scene, stating that if any illegal activities or violations of renovation regulations were discovered, appropriate actions would be taken. Dozens of firefighters responded swiftly to the scene, which was reached shortly after 11:30 a.m. The force of the explosion caused significant damage to sections of the building's exterior, leaving scattered fragments strewn across the streets. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen described feeling the shock of the blast at her office nearby. She emphasized that the fire bureau's immediate priority was a rescue operation, but concurrently, an investigation was underway to determine the cause of the accident and ascertain if any further dangers existed.Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te expressed his concern and instructed all relevant government agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. The nation mourns the loss of life and extends its condolences to the families of the victims. The authorities remain committed to uncovering the truth behind the explosion and ensuring the safety of all citizens
