A gas explosion rocked a department store in Taichung, Taiwan, leaving four people dead and 26 injured. The blast devastated the 12th-floor food court, sending debris cascading onto the streets below.

Fire authorities in Taiwan reported a devastating gas explosion at a department store on Thursday, resulting in four fatalities and 26 injuries. The blast occurred at the food court on the 12th floor of the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi department store in Taichung city. The impact of the explosion was significant, causing the higher floors of the upscale establishment to collapse and showering debris onto pedestrians below.

Among the victims were two tourists from Macau, confirmed by Macao's Tourism Office. The tourists, part of a family of seven on a vacation, lost their lives in the tragedy. Five other family members were also injured and are currently receiving medical treatment at local hospitals in Taichung. While a portion of the store was undergoing renovations, it remains unclear whether these works were connected to the explosion. Taichung Vice Mayor Cheng Chao-hsin addressed the media at the scene, stating that if any illegal actions or violations of renovation regulations are discovered, appropriate measures will be taken. Dozens of firefighters were swiftly deployed to the scene at approximately 11:30 a.m. The building sustained considerable damage, with parts of its exterior compromised and fragments scattered across the streets. Taichung Mayor Lu Shiow-yen, who felt the shock of the explosion at her nearby office, assured reporters that the fire bureau would prioritize a rescue operation while simultaneously conducting a thorough investigation. She confirmed that officers were meticulously checking for any additional dangers. Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te has issued a directive to all relevant government agencies to investigate the cause of the accident, underscoring the gravity of the situation
