Detroit police officer Cameron Richardson was killed in an off-duty hit-and-run car crash Sunday, the Detroit Police Department announced. Richardson had been with the department for one year and previously served as an Army Ranger. Police said Richardson was driving home from work when a van collided with his Jeep Wrangler, causing it to roll over.
A GoFundMe organized for Richardson’s two daughters describes him as a “bright, adventurous, and amazing soul who touched the lives of everyone he met.” That fund had raised over $5,000 as of Monday morning. Interim Police Chief Todd Bettison described Richardson as “one of Detroit’s finest” in a community briefing Sunday. “This is definitely a tragic day for the department,” he said. “Officer Richardson was -- we believe he didn’t suffer, I will say that much.” Bettison added the department has identified a person of interest who was allegedly driving the runaway vehicle. He encouraged that individual to turn themselves in. “On social media, I looked at some of the comments and what did give me comfort was Detroiters are wishing the department well,” Bettison said. “He was a good officer, a fine officer.” Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, D-District 5, shared her condolences in a statement via X. “This devastating loss underscores the daily risks that our officers face to protect and serve our city,” she said. “Officer Richardson’s commitment to keeping Detroit safe will not be forgotten, and his memory will forever live in the hearts of those who knew and worked alongside him.
