Mets' starter was relegated to a different role after poor start
New York Mets pitcher Frankie Montas returns to the dugout during the fourth inning of a baseball game against the San Francisco Giants, Sunday, Aug. 3, 2025, in New York. After changing into his usual orange cut-off T-shirt and shorts, he grabbed his iPad and headed to a meeting with the other pitchers and coaches.
After about 40 minutes away from the clubhouse, Montas returned to his locker, where a group of reporters finally got a chance to speak with him. Two days earlier, on Tuesday, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza had announced that“I told I consider myself a starter,” Montas said before a game against the Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. “In the meantime, if that’s the way that can help this team and I can contribute to get a win, I’m definitely willing to do it.” Montas started the season on the injured list after suffering a lat strain in spring training. He posted a 6.38 ERA with 1.56 WHIP in eight games after being activated off the injured list on June 24. With each outing, Montas’s season got progressively worse. He allowed 13 earned runs in his last 11 innings, a 10.32 ERA, and finally earned a demotion.“Probably multi-inning guy, you know, kind of like a long man out of the bullpen,” Mendoza said. “But you never know. Things happen, and who knows? ... “I see him more like the Blackburn role, where you know, kind of length, but there’s going to be days, depending on where we are, bullpen-wise, that he might pitch multiple innings.”Mets weather update : New start time against Braves announcedThank you for relying on us to provide the journalism you can trust.
