Democracy and drinks: Houston voters go to the poll at a Montrose bar
A neck-and-neck county judge race. A tense battle for the governorship. Allegations of voter intimidation. Long lines in 80-degree heat. A teetering democracy. It’s enough to make anyone wake up onLuckily, at one Houston polling place, you can cast your ballot under violet lights and loop back around for libations on the patio. The unofficial tagline of the day: Voting in the front, party in the back.
By 8:30 in the morning, a line wrapped through the bar as voters took refuge from the long wait at the West Gray Multi-Service Center. One woman came in with a small dog on a leash . Outside, a couple took a selfie with their “I VOTED” stickers. By 9:50 a.m., BUDDY’s had served 164 voters. By 11:54 a.m., it had added 90 more. By 2:35 p.m., 400 people had cast their ballots.
Another man walked in. “Looking to vote?” someone else asked. He shook his head. He was just looking to drink.
