Defending champ Coco Gauff bounced out of U.S. Open by fellow American as Serena looks on
For the second straight Grand Slam tournament, Navarro, the 23-year-old former NCAA singles champion from the University of Virginia, has ousted Gauff in the fourth round.
Navarro, who was born in New York City and is the daughter of billionaire businessman Ben Navarro, became the second American woman into the quarters alongside Buffalo native and No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula, who plays on Monday., with No. 12 Taylor Fritz, the top-ranked American man, the first to advance to the quarterfinals by taking out No. 6 Casper Ruud in four sets on Sunday.
Serving to stay in the match at 3-5, 30-all Gauff double-faulted for the 20th time to bring it to match point. She then sailed a forehand wide to lose the match and the two friends embraced at net.In the second set, Gauff faced a break point at 3-all and attempted a drop shot, but Navarro raced toward the net and placed a perfect forehand winner into the corner for the break and a 4-3 advantage.
“I think she also has a massive tennis IQ, I thinks he really uses her brain out there,” Williams said of Gauff. “I think she can really rely on her serve as well. Obviously, her movement is great and I just love her mental toughness and her mental fortitude.” “When I watched her at the Olympics, leading the parade, leading the whole Olympics, not only the American team, I saw her trading pins, she was photographed meeting all her idols,” Evert said. “I’m like, this girl won’t be able to play. She’ll be so exhausted. She won’t be able to play. I didn’t expect her to win. She didn’t win. I think emotionally that took so much out of her. She’s still a young girl and wants to have fun, as well.
