Defending champion Coco Gauff
Coco Gauff holds up the championship trophy after defeating Aryna Sabalenka, of Belarus, in the women's singles final of the U.S. Open tennis championships, Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023, in New York. rolled into the U.S. Open on a hot streak and then became the youngest women’s champion since a 17-year-old Serena Williams won it in 1999.
A number of factors have contributed to her struggles, including her shaky forehand, her outsized role in the Olympics and the changing of surfaces this summer for the top players. Gauff spent a week at home after the Olympics to be with her family and regoup, and she hopes the break pays dividends in her mental game.
“It’s a tale of two different summers for ” ESPN’s Patrick McEnroe said Monday on air. “Last year she brought Brad Gilbert on board and just caught fire, winning Cincinnati, winning DC, finals Canada. She came in here with a ton of confidence. Gauff’s forehand has been a major issue this summer, with her committing numerous unforced errors and opponents capitalizing on it.
“I think she’s gone away from her strengths,” ESPN’s Mary Joe Fernandez said on air. “With that extreme grip you have to accelerate, you can’t just guide it. Once she develops her confidence more, I think you’ll see her getting better racket-head speed.”She will next meet No. 87 Tatjana Maria of Germany in the second round. After that, Gauff could face five straight seeded players, starting with No. 27 Elina Svitolina and then Navarro.
