Matthew Livelsberger, a 37-year-old U.S. Army Green Beret, is believed to have died by suicide before a rented Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside a hotel in Las Vegas. Authorities suspect Livelsberger intended to cause further damage near President-elect Donald Trump's hotel. Investigators found a second firearm, fireworks, and personal identification inside the burned vehicle. Livelsberger served in the Army from 2006 to 2012 and was on approved leave at the time of his death.
A decorated U.S. Army Green Beret who officials say shot himself in the head before a Tesla Cybertruck exploded outside a hotel spent a significant amount of time in Bucyrus, Richland County, and Westerville.
Investigators found a second firearm, a number of fireworks, a passport, a military ID, credit cards, an iPhone, and a smartwatch inside the burning vehicle. The suspect's remains were burned beyond recognition, and investigators have not definitively identified them as Livelsberger, but the IDs and tattoos on the body “give a strong indication that it’s him,” the sheriff said.
U.S. Army officials said he served in the Green Beret. He was active duty Army from January 2006 to March 2011 and then joined the National Guard from March 2011 to July 2012, followed by the Army Reserve from July 2012 to December 2012. Darren Lacheta, whose niece was briefly married to Livelsberger over a decade ago, expressed shock at the news.
