Today, Merrin and his supporters are trying to quell an attempt by some Republicans to band together with Democrats to elect someone else as speaker, sources said. The House is scheduled to meet at 2 p.m. to begin the two-year legislative session and elect a speaker. The speaker is one of the most powerful posts in state government. He or she has the ability to block or move any bill, make committee assignments and sway state spending and policy.
Householder, who served as speaker from 2001 to 2004 and 2019 to July 2020, is scheduled to go on trial in U.S. District Court later this month. Prosecutors allege he ran a criminal enterprise that took $61 million in bribes through dark money groups in exchange for legislation.
