During the meeting, Tice discussed Sharaa's own five-year imprisonment by American forces, including time spent in Abu Ghraib detention center in Iraq. She highlighted the shared experience of captivity, stating, 'They know what we are going through. And as they do their important work, they are trying to make things right for people like us.'Tice expressed optimism that Sharaa pledged to help locate her son. She also revealed that the new Trump administration had reached out to her, demonstrating a commitment to finding answers about Austin's fate. Tice's previous trips to Syria included a three-month stay in 2014, during which she developed a connection with the country her son reported on. While the last visit was in 2015, subsequent visa applications were denied by the Assad regime. Reflecting on her experience, Tice said, 'I know that I come here, I am part of the Syrian mothers,' emphasizing solidarity with the mothers of countless Syrians imprisoned by Assad. She added, 'And we can sit down and have tea together, and we can also carry out burdens together.
