DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — The mother of American journalist Austin Tice made her first visit to Syria in almost a decade Monday and said that the administration of President-elect Donald Trump had offered support to help find her son, who disappeared in 2012. Debra Tice met with Syria ’s de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa and Nizar Zakka, head of non-profit Hostage Aid Worldwide , in Damascus.
Tice expressed hope that the Trump administration, which has pledged to prioritize the release of American hostages, would be successful in bringing her son home. Austin Tice vanished near Damascus in August 2012 while covering the Syrian civil war. His fate has remained a mystery since then, despite numerous diplomatic efforts and appeals from his family. Tice’s visit to Syria comes at a time of heightened tensions between the United States and the Syrian government. However, both sides have indicated a willingness to cooperate on the issue of Austin Tice’s disappearance. The mother’s meeting with Syrian officials is seen as a significant development in the long and arduous search for her son
