A deceased night cleaner and high levels of carbon monoxide were discovered at Syracuse Academy Charter School on January 7, 2025. Students and staff were safely evacuated.
The Syracuse Fire Department responded to a report of a cardiac arrest at Syracuse Academy Charter School on January 7, 2025. Upon arrival, firefighters initiated patient care and a carbon monoxide detector attached to an emergency medical bag began alerting. Additional resources were called to the scene to investigate high levels of carbon monoxide found in the cafeteria. The body of a male night cleaner employed by the school was discovered on the floor of the cafeteria.
Students and staff were evacuated to the district office building next door. Twelve adults were evaluated, with five transported to local hospitals for mild to moderate carbon monoxide exposure symptoms. The Syracuse Police Department is investigating the cause of death, which is unknown to be related to the carbon monoxide levels found in the building
