A deceased male was found inside the Syracuse Academy Charter School cafeteria alongside high levels of carbon monoxide. Students and staff were evacuated and taken to a nearby building. Five adults were hospitalized with mild to moderate carbon monoxide exposure.
The Syracuse Fire Department said a dead body and high levels of carbon monoxide were found inside of Syracuse Academy Charter School on Jan. 7, 2025. Crews were called to the scene for a report of a cardiac arrest at 1001 Park Ave. around 7:54 a.m. Firefighters initiated patient care. The department said a carbon monoxide detector attached to a bag carrying emergency medical equipment started alerting.
Additional resources were called to the scene to assist with investigating high levels of carbon monoxide. The department said the high levels of carbon monoxide were found inside the charter school's cafeteria. Lower levels were found in the rest of the school. The department said no children were exposed to the high levels of carbon monoxide. The body, a male, was found on the floor of the cafeteria by staff, the department said. Students were kept away from the area. Students and staff were then evacuated from the school once the carbon monoxide levels were discovered. They were moved to the district office building next door. The Syracuse Academy of Science Charter School identified the deceased as a night cleaner employed by the school. Students and staff were dismissed from school early. 'The safety and well-being of our students and staff are our highest priorities and we are taking all necessary steps to address this situation,' the letter said. The department said 12 adults were evaluated. Five of them were taken to local hospitals with mild to moderate symptoms of carbon monoxide exposure. The department said of them were working in the kitchen area.The Syracuse Police Department is investigating the cause of death. The fire department said it is unknown if it's related to the levels of carbon monoxide found in the building when fire crews arrived
