Being a DC Comics fan these past couple of years has been extraordinarily rewarding, and it seems like its hot streak is nowhere close to ending. For example, it has been a while since Batman has had such strong consecutive outings, between DC’s popular Absolute universe, Dan Watters and Hayden Sherman’s limited series, Batman: Dark Patterns, and Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’s mainline Batman run.

It is about time that DC’s scope zoomed out a little bit, though, and that is precisely the plan concerning the newest phase of the DC All In initiative, dubbed DC Next Level. Delivering a whole slate of relaunches and new series, DC Next Level is terrific as it will feature many individual runs for characters who have not felt the warmth of the spotlight in a while, or who arguably deserve to bask in it longer. DC Next Level is Shining a Bat-Signal DC Next Level is described as “a series of bold, creator-forward #1’s, starring fan-favorite characters, and helmed by some of the best talent in comics.” Confirmed thus far, though with sparse details available for most of them, are as follows: Lobo, Deathstroke, and Batwoman are already proof that DC Next Level is a spectacular opportunity to showcase a wide breadth of creative teams, especially with art styles in each book being so drastic and magnetic. Plus, considering that these books belong to the main continuity of ongoing runs, it will be fascinating to see how Matt Fraction and Jorge Jiménez’s Batman bleeds into Barbara Gordon: Breakout after issue #9 in May. DC is Cashing Out on Absolute’s Success Scott Snyder states that DC Next Level titles “will launch similar to DC’s Absolute line of comics,” and that they are “very new-reader friendly and will roll out over time.” Indeed, DC’s Absolute universe is undoubtedly its golden goose, and it makes sense why DC would want to try to replicate that as best as possible with #1’s that readers can latch onto and begin a new ongoing series with. They may not be as wild and brazen as the Absolute runs’ takes on DC characters, but Next Level should be terrific for readers who are interested in books that are in-continuity concerning the main, Prime Earth universe, and “exist alongside DC’s ongoing comic book series like Superman, Batman, Justice League Unlimited, and more.”
