Dean and Sam fighting in Supernatural
Supernatural may have begun as a new take on a family relationship drama with a monster-of-the-week format, but the show evolved into something much bigger. Supernatural is a fantasy TV show that is considered a masterpiece for navigating complex and emotive stories while seamlessly blending genres including horror, fantasy and comedy.
The series follows two brothers who hunt supernatural beings. There are many supernatural dramas available, but few have risen to Supernatural's iconic status. The TV show changed the fantasy genre forever, lasting for well over a decade and embracing meta episodes that referenced the series' fanbase. The show is one of a few fantasy TV legends that has been considered for a reboot, and another's failure could make Supernatural's return more important. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is arguably the most influential fantasy TV show of all time, and its reboot, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar reprising her role as Buffy was greatly anticipated. However, Gellar recently made a shocking statement revealing that the Buffy reboot had been canceled, and after this disappointment, we need another excellent supernatural drama back on TV. After Buffy's Revival Got Axed, We Need Supernatural Back More Than Ever Buffy the Vampire Slayer was ahead of its time, reversing common character tropes and featuring admirable female characters without reducing them to one-dimensional"sexy action heroes." Buffy perfectly combined horror and fantasy elements with more common issues, just as Supernatural would later do. Buffy dealt with difficult school teachers and homework, as well as ancient evil forces and a doomed romance. This complex mix of genres alone made Buffy the Vampire Slayer stand out, but the show also reached emotional depths that few young adult shows did at the time. Many episodes covered dark themes, but the best episode of Buffy was a harrowing TV masterpiece, showing Buffy discovering her mother dead on the couch and dealing with the resulting trauma. Buffy fans would not have to wait for long after the show finished, to discover a new fantasy TV drama with just as much depth. Just three years later, Supernatural filled the gap that was left by Buffy the Vampire Slayer without attempting to copy the show, and both Buffy and Supernatural are essential series for fantasy fans. Now that the Buffy reboot has been axed, fantasy fans are once again in the position of needing another great and nostalgic TV show to enjoy, and a logical candidate would be Supernatural. Now is the perfect time to bring the show back, after other TV shows that spark our nostalgia have been so successful, like Stranger Things and the upcoming Firefly reboot. Many of Supernatural's themes are timeless, like the relationship between two very different brothers. As Supernatural is one of the few great fantasy TV shows with over five seasons, there is plenty of source material to take inspiration from, and both Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki have said that they would be open to reprising their roles. What We Know So Far About A Possible Supernatural Reunion Supernatural is not just a beloved show among its viewers, as many of its stars have stated that they would like to see a reboot happen. While a new Supernatural series is bringing back Ackles and Padalecki, this is in the form of variant covers for a comic book series, and it will not fill the Supernatural-shaped gap on streaming platforms. Fans have long been speculating about the possibility of a Supernatural revival, and many older shows are currently getting ready to return. After the announcement of a Buffy reboot followed by Firefly starts confirming a follow-up series, the idea that a Supernatural reboot might be in discussion feels very plausible, even if Buffy is not to be. When the main trio in Supernatural reunited for an interview with TV Insider, they shared their ideas for a reboot. Padalecki floated the idea of a miniseries, while Ackles felt that had Supernatural originally been a streaming show, it would have been R-rated. That said, creator Eric Kripke already has an R-rated show in the form of The Boys, which has interesting implications for Supernatural. Misha Collins told TV Insider that he asked Eric Kripke what he would do with a new Supernatural show, to which he replied that he would want to be"as horrifying as possible." Ackles has other ideas, worrying that"changing that now might be doing it a disservice." As of yet, there has been no confirmation that a Supernatural reboot is going ahead. Supernatural's Revival Can Establish It As TV's Best-Ever Spooky Series Many streaming platforms have horror series without a single weak episode, like The Haunting of Hill House, which became an instant horror icon, and Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. However, many of these are limited series or anthologies, and are not designed to be long-running shows. Horror is a popular genre, but the best long-running spooky shows include other elements. There is nothing wrong with a single-season show, and a short masterpiece can often be better than a long-running TV show that loses momentum over time despite an excellent premise, like The Walking Dead. Investing in a plan for a long-running series might feel like taking a risk to streaming platforms, but Supernatural has already proven it can maintain its quality. This is where Supernatural has occasionally surpassed Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Every season of Supernatural brought a new dimension to the story, and while Buffy mostly remained in Sunnydale dealing with the Hellmouth, Supernatural had a wider scope. The show involved angels as well as demons, and even a version of God, making it a much more ambitious series. Supernatural took risks that few other TV shows dared to attempt. While Buffy is widely credited with popularizing musical episodes, Supernatural's best episode,"The French Mistake," broke the fourth wall with a meta twist that saw the characters playing themselves as bad actors on a TV show called"Supernatural." The episode was not the scariest, but it was hilarious. TV shows with a spooky factor but without being true horror are extremely popular. Supernatural shares many themes and tones with Lucifer, American Gods, and The Sandman. That said, many episodes of Supernatural are better than anything made today. With all three other shows over and Buffy canceled, a Supernatural reboot is the logical choice for the best spooky series on TV. 696 9.5/10 8/10 Supernatural 10 stars 9 stars 8 stars 7 stars 6 stars 5 stars 4 stars 3 stars 2 stars 1 star Like Follow Followed TV-14 Drama Mystery Sci-Fi & Fantasy Action Supernatural Release Date 2005 - 2020 Network The WB, The CW Showrunner Eric Kripke Directors Philip Sgriccia, John F.
