For the first time, David Peterson has secured his place as a consistent member of the New York Mets rotation. The Mets drafted Peterson in the first round back in 2017. Last year, he had a breakthrough season, going 10-3 with a career-best 2.90 ERA over 21 starts. Peterson underwent hip surgery last offseason to repair a torn labrum and missed the beginning of the 2024 campaign. He emphasizes how significant the surgery was in allowing him to pitch without pain and with improved mechanics and consistency. This, in turn, has resulted in more accurate pitches and better control. Peterson is the longest-tenured starter on the Mets' staff and is considered a reliable presence in a rotation filled with uncertainty. Other starters like Carlos Carrasco have been hampered by injuries, pitching only 10 ¹/₃ innings last year due to shoulder and calf issues. Clay Holmes is making the transition from closer for the New York Yankees to a starting role for the Mets. The other two spots in the rotation are up for grabs due to injuries to Sean Manaea and Frankie Montas, making it unlikely they'll be ready for Opening Day. Last year's performance was an outlier for Peterson, but he has the potential to be a key factor in the Mets' success this season.
