Now the chatter is growing in diplomatic circles about how he might be used, even if the Tories found themselves in opposition. His former chancellor George Osborne, and spin doctor Andy Coulson, have spent months promoting the idea that if Labour does win then Sir Keir Starmer should keep Cameron on in the Foreign Office.

Whether the Labour leader would want a Conservative politician representing the UK to the Trump administration – and one who would have questioned Starmer’s record on national security only days earlier – is another question. In the short term, with international crises in the Middle East and Ukraine deepening, there is still plenty for Cameron to do on the day job. In fact, with the Prime Minister making daily visits on the UK campaign trail, the next month and a half could be one of the most crucial periods of Cameron’s tenure.

It is likely that Cameron, as well as Shapps, will be called on to attend multilateral meetings to address both crises in the coming weeks. The Defence Secretary will attend any Nato defence ministers meetings.
