Overcoming prolonged delays and technical challenges, the US Army’s Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon is approaching its first operational deployment, marking a key milestone in the race for hypersonic superiority.
The ground-based system, also known as Dark Eagle, is expected to enter service within weeks, bringing a new long-range strike capability to the battlefield. Designed to travel at speeds above Mach 5 while maneuvering mid-flight, the weapon promises to challenge existing defense systems. Despite unresolved testing gaps, fielding has already begun, signaling a shift from development to deployment in one of the Army’s most closely watched missile programs.US hypersonic leapDark Eagle is slated to become the first hypersonic weapon deployed for frontline US service. Frank Lozano, Program Acquisition Executive for Fire, said at the McAleese Defense Programs Conference on March 17, that the Army is nearing full equipment of its first operational battery of the Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon, with final integration expected within weeks, according to Defence Security Asia.Dark Eagle is a trailer-launched, ground-based hypersonic boost-glide weapon designed to strike high-value, time-sensitive targets at extreme distances. After launch, a rocket booster accelerates the glide vehicle to speeds exceeding Mach 5, before it separates and maneuvers through the atmosphere toward its target. Its combination of speed, maneuverability, and a depressed flight profile is intended to complicate detection and interception by advanced air and missile defense systems.The system is assessed to have a range of about 2,175 miles , with potential reach extending from Guam to mainland China, from Western Europe to Moscow, and from the Gulf region to Tehran. This exceeds earlier publicly disclosed estimates of at least 1,725 miles , though the difference may reflect updated performance data or previously limited disclosures.Dark Eagle carries a warhead weighing less than 30 pounds, relying primarily on kinetic energy generated by its extreme velocity. The payload is designed to disperse projectiles over an area comparable to a large parking lot, enhancing effectiveness against radar sites, air defenses, and command nodes. The system can reach maximum range in under 20 minutes, significantly reducing adversary response time.Next-gen strike expandsThe program has accumulated more than $12 billion in funding since 2018 and aims to deliver a conventional long-range strike capability capable of targeting hardened positions, air defenses, command nodes, and missile systems, reports Army Recognition.Deployment follows multiple delays caused by technical setbacks during testing in fiscal years 2023 and 2025, including failed launches and canceled test events. Successful end-to-end tests conducted in June and December 2024 demonstrated full system integration, with flight distances exceeding 1,988 miles . However, comprehensive operational evaluation is expected to extend through 2027, as sufficient performance data has not yet been accumulated.Despite these gaps, fielding activities have continued in parallel with testing, including system integration, safety validation, and unit-level readiness. Full operational capability for the first battery depends on completing missile allotments and integration processes.According to sources, production remains constrained by manufacturing complexity. The system requires materials capable of withstanding temperatures approaching 3,000°F during hypersonic flight, and assembly involves manual integration of key components. Current production rates are estimated at roughly one missile per month, with a target of increasing to two per month. Each missile is estimated to cost around $41 million, with early procurement costs expected to be higher due to low production volumes, Army Recognition reported.The Army plans to expand deployment across multiple Multi-Domain Task Forces, particularly in contested environments such as the Indo-Pacific. The system is also part of a broader joint effort with the US Navy under the Conventional Prompt Strike program, which will deploy a related variant on naval platforms using a shared glide body and booster architecture.
