Christiania has openly sold cannabis on its main street for more than 50 years.

COPENHAGEN: Residents in the Freetown Christiania hippy enclave in Denmark’s capital Copenhagen say they want to shut down cannabis sales on its main street following a deadly shooting on Saturday.

The illegal drug trade has been tolerated by authorities, even as an increase in gang-related activities in the area has resulted in multiple shootings in recent years.“As long as there is a massive illegal cannabis trade, there will be a violent and deadly struggle for the market,” residents said in a joint statement posted on Christiania’s website yesterday.

The mayor of Copenhagen, Sophie Haestorp Andersen, yesterday told the newspaper Berlingske that she also wants Pusher Street closed permanently.
