Arctic air is sweeping into Alabama Friday night, bringing dangerously cold temperatures and wind chills through Sunday.

An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for much of central and south Alabama with a Cold Weather Advisory in effect for the rest of Central Alabama from Friday night to midday Saturday. The Extreme Cold Warning will include all of central and south Alabama from Saturday night to midday Sunday.

Dangerously cold wind chills as low as -4 degrees are expected in the warning area and as low as 5 degrees in the advisory area.Residents should be ready for potentially life-threatening cold conditions, especially in northern and central parts of the state. The arctic cold front moving through the state Friday evening will usher in some of the coldest air of the season. Temperatures will plummet overnight, with lows ranging from the upper teens in northern Alabama to the mid-20s along the coast. Wind chills Saturday morning will reach the single digits across much of the state, with areas in the northwest potentially experiencing wind chills as low as 5 degrees below zero. This map shows the elevated cold risk across Alabama for Saturday and Sunday. Elevated risk means hypothermia or frostbite could occur with prolonged exposure and lack of proper clothing. Significant risk means hypothermia or frostbite is likely with prolonged exposure and lack of proper clothing.Saturday will bring little relief as temperatures struggle to rise. Many areas in northern and central Alabama may not climb above freezing, with highs only reaching the upper 20s to low 30s. Winds will intensify, with gusts between 25 and 45 mph expected statewide, prompting Wind Advisories across Alabama. The combination of frigid temperatures and strong winds will create dangerous conditions outdoors.Light snow is possible in northeastern Alabama, with the National Weather Service issuing a Winter Weather Advisory for six northeastern counties. Accumulations of one-quarter to one-half inch are expected, with localized totals up to 1 inch possible. Snow flurries may extend as far south as Clanton and Alexander City through midday Saturday, though no accumulation is expected in those areas. A Winter Weather Advisory for light snow accumulations of up to 1 inch and potential slick travel is in effect from Friday night to noon Saturday for Etowah, Cherokee, Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay and Randolph counties.Sunday morning will likely bring the coldest temperatures of the season, with lows plummeting to the mid-teens across northern and central Alabama and low 20s along the immediate coast. Single-digit wind chills are expected throughout the state. Temperatures will begin moderating Sunday afternoon and continue warming into early next week. By Tuesday, highs will reach the mid-50s to lower 60s across Alabama, with another cold front expected to arrive Wednesday, bringing increased rain chances. The Weather Service notes some uncertainty in the extended forecast regarding the strength and orientation of the next weather system expected midweek, but models show good agreement on its arrival Wednesday.Hypothermia occurs when your body temperature falls below 95°F. Use a thermometer to check. Warning signs include uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness and exhaustion. Get medical attention immediately. If you can’t get help quickly, begin warming the body SLOWLY. Warm the body core first, NOT the extremities. Warming extremities first drives the cold blood to the heart and can cause the body temperature to drop further — which may lead to heart failure. If you are helping someone with hypothermia, get the person into dry clothing and wrap them in a warm blanket. Be sure to cover their head and neck. Do not give the person alcohol, drugs, coffee, or any HOT beverage or food. WARM broth and food is better. Young children under the age of two and people over the age of 65 are most susceptible to hypothermia. Hypothermia can set in over a period of time. Keep the thermostat above 69°F, wear warm clothing, eat food for warmth, and drink plenty of water or fluids other than alcohol and caffeine to stay hydrated. The Advance Local Express Desk uses AI tools to assist in producing content, which is reviewed and edited by staff.
