Extreme cold watches issued for parts of the state.

Another shot of arctic air is headed for Alabama, and it will arrive this weekend. Above are the forecast low temperatures for Saturday night, which is expected to be the coldest. It’s been a chilly week, but it may seem warm compared with what the National Weather Service is warning is headed this way this weekend.

Another big winter storm will bring low chances for some snow and extremely cold temperatures to all of Alabama over the weekend. “The time to prepare for this dangerous cold wave will be over then ext two days,” the National Weather Service said on Thursday. “Be sure to have preparations in place to protect people, pets, and pipes, as temperatures will stay below freezing for a prolonged period of time.” Alabama will only get a glancing blow from this weekend’s winter storm -- the big chances for snow will be over Georgia and the Carolinas and up the East Coast. However, as the weather service likes to say there is a “non-zero chance” northeast Alabama could see a little snow on Friday or Saturday. While Alabama may miss out on snow, it will not avoid another arctic blast headed this way. The weather service has issued extreme cold watches for the weekend, when wind chills could make it feel as cold as five below zero in northern parts of the state.High temperatures on Saturday will only be in the 20s in the northern half of the state. South Alabama will only be in the mid- to upper 30s.Saturday could end up being the coldest day this winter in terms of high temperatures, which won't get out of the 20s in north and north-central Alabama.Saturday night into Sunday morning is expected to be the coldest of the weekend, with lows in the low teens to possibly even single digits possible in north Alabama and lows in the teens expected far into south Alabama. No travel issues or other winter weather hazards are expected in Alabama through the next week, including this weekend. The National Weather Service in Huntsville said there will be a low chance -- 10 to 20 percent -- of light snow of a half-inch or less across northeast Alabama on Friday night and possibly on Saturday. Here's where there will be low chances for a little snow on Friday in north Alabama. The weather service in Birmingham said there was a low chance of light rain or wintry mix early Friday morning, and a low chance of light rain across the eastern part of the region through Friday afternoon. The weather service said they will closely watching trends to see if snow showers will be possible across the northeast part of the state on Saturday, but right now confidence is too low to add that into the forecast. The weather service expects the worst of the cold to be short-lived, and a slight “warming” trend will be possible next week. Temperatures by Tuesday may feel “balmy,” the weather service said, with highs in the 40s in north Alabama and the 50s in central and south Alabama .Leigh Morgan is an Alabama native.
