Dallas to honor lynching victim as it confronts past racial violence at the Trinity River | SharonFGrigsby
William Taylor’s last words, after vigilantes chased him from town to town, were “you are hanging an innocent man.”
The frantic shuffling among jailhouses ended near Midlothian, where masked men kidnapped Taylor and, seizing the sheriff and his deputy as well, headed back to Dallas and the Trinity River. The Sept. 12, 1884, lynching of William Allen Taylor occurred in this general vicinity where today the Commerce Street bridge crosses the Trinity River and the Dallas County jail and criminal justice complex sits in the background.
