City Council member Zarin Gracey says a mix of housing and retail is preferred for the closed University General Hospital site Dallas council member Zarin Gracey, in a memo Thursday, asked the council’s economic development committee to approve steps to allow the former University General Hospital site to be sold through a third-party broker. He also asked for the proposed sale to be forwarded to the City Council for a final review and approval.
“The preferred use for this site includes a mixed-use development featuring both housing and retail to support the area’s economic growth,” Gracey wrote in the memo to council mayor pro tem Tennell Atkins, who chairs the economic development committee.approved spending $6.
The City Council approved the hospital purchase before Gracey was elected to represent the area in June 2022. Arnold was the lone no vote at the time. The city hasCity officials at the time said the hospital was bought to help Dallas’ homeless population. In 2023, then-city manager T.C. Broadnax opposed selling the property out of concern that the city would have little control over what would be built there if sold to a private developer.
