Following public outcry, including from Montgomery’s mayor and police chief, that one of the suspects in the city’s recent mass shooting was released on bond, Montgomery County’s district attorney is seeking to a way to bring about his rearrest.

Whiting’s bond was set at $60,000, which is currently the maximum, and he was later able to post bail and walk free from the Montgomery County Detention Facility.

Javorick Whiting, 19, who is charged with one count of attempted murder in connection to the Oct. 4 mass shooting in downtown Montgomery, was released on a $60,000 bond. Now the Montgomery district attorney's office is working to get the bond amount increased.Reed calling the release “a slap in the face” to the victims and the community and Graboys urging lawmakers to expand Aniah’s Law to cover not only attempted murder charges but all violent crimes. Court filings stamped late Monday evening show that Montgomery County District Attorney Azzie Oliver’s office is seeking through the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit of Alabama to have Whiting’s bond increased. To support her motion, Oliver’s filings with the court state that during the investigation of the mass shooting, Whiting was identified as the person who shot at a juvenile victim in the Bibb Street/Commerce Street area. The victim suffered life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition. The filings also note that Whiting fled the scene after the shooting and states that when he was arrested, he had in his possession a loaded firearm that had an extended magazine and Glock switch. The DA’s office stated in the brief that “the current bond amount is woefully inadequate to protect the public from this dangerous and violent criminal,” and that the $60,000 amount “is not appropriate in this case due to the facts and circumstances surrounding this case.” The DA’s office is asking a judge to set a hearing to consider amending Whiting’s conditions of bond and increasing his bond amount. District Judge Michael Godwin, on Tuesday, scheduled a hearing on the matter for Oct. 30. Whiting is required to be at the hearing. Failure to appear would result in his bond’s revocation and a warrant for his arrest.Iconic Chris’ Hotdogs in Montgomery closes for renovations under new ownershipElmore County’s ‘Enhance Elmore’ plan: What voters need to knowMontgomery City Council amends resolution to fund Jackson Hospital, overrides mayoral veto
