As Bilal Mahmood prepares to take over for Dean Preston, community members want to forge relationships with new supervisor

Neighborhood leaders in San Francisco ’s District 5 are preparing for a transition in the supervisor’s office after Bilal Mahmood unseated incumbent Dean Preston , reminding themselves to stay open to working with the new administration.

Preston told The Examiner in a statement that he’s “incredibly proud of how my office has worked around the clock to help our constituents and neighborhoods, and I sincerely hope that work continues from the D5 office.” “We will ensure a smooth transition,” he said. “What’s important as well is I will work with everyone, even if they didn’t support me.”

Japantown residents, meanwhile, say they are concerned about current and forthcoming construction projects, according to Jeremy Chan of the Japantown Task Force. Chan said the ongoing Peace Plaza renovation and forthcoming Buchanan Mall upgrades are “causing a lot of anxiety for business owners.” “In spite of the fact that the malls still seem to be getting a lot of traffic, I do know that it’s been reported that sales have gone down,” Chan said. He said it’s causing even more stress because construction is slated to continue for at least another year.

Christin Evans, a founding board member of the Haight Ashbury Merchants Association, also said she is sad to see Preston go, but she said she’s hopeful Mahmood and her organization will be able to work together on neighborhood issues.
