Freebirds World Burrito, a Texas-based fast casual burrito spot, has a new owner.
Sun Holdings, based in Farmers Branch and the second-largest franchisee organization in the U.S., acquired the chain for an undisclosed sum, it said in a news release.Freebirds was founded more than 30 years ago and has its headquarters in Austin, after a stint in College Station. Beyond burritos, it’s known for its grill-centric menu items that also include quesadillas and bowls, among others.“Freebirds brings a distinct and vibrant energy to our portfolio.
With the deal, Sun Holdings adds 64 Freebirds locations to its portfolio that includes concepts such as Applebee’s, Arby’s, Burger King, Golden Corral, IHOP, McAlister’s, Papa John’s, Popeye’s, and Taco Bueno. It operates that bevy of concepts across 27 states.The Freebirds buy stands out as it marks the first time Sun Holdings debuts as not only a franchisee, but a brand owner.
Freebirds is poised for growth, and we have an ambitious expansion strategy that we are excited to get to work on,” Perales said.
