President Cyril Ramaphosa has paid tribute to the men and women in uniform in the South African National Defence Force, saying they should continue to put the country first.

The president was delivering the keynote address at the annual Armed Forces Day event in Richards Bay in KwaZulu-Natal. “Two weeks ago we lost flight sergeant Vusi Mabena when his helicopter came under attack in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. We extend our deepest sympathies and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues,” he said, adding that Mabena was not alone.“From North Africa to Southern Africa, from the Sahel to the Horn of Africa and the great lakes region, SA depends on the military to support peace building on the continent as part of a mandate from the AU and the UN.
He commended the armed forces for assisting in maintaining law and order in times of crisis in a disciplined manner, saying one of the primary functions of the military was to protect the territorial integrity of the country’s borders. This he said, “is a tough task”.
