“Am I ever going to hear from you, ‘It’s not on me, this person did it or told me how to do it,’?” Councilman Martin J. Sweeney asked. “No sir,” Pretel responded. “I’m going to own this.”
Cuyahoga County Sheriff nominee Harold Pretel speaks before Cuyahoga County Council's Committee of the Whole on July 6, 2023. CLEVELAND, Ohio – Harold Pretel, who is nominated to be the next Cuyahoga County sheriff, earned County Council’s first nod of approval Thursday, repeatedly stressing that he will always keep the body informed about issues with the sheriff’s office and the jail.
He plans to regularly report to both council and the county executive, Pretel said during an hour-long question-and-answer session during council’s Committee of the Whole. Even if the incident occurs at 2 a.m., Pretel pledged to call Council President Pernel Jones, Jr., Vice Chair Cheryl Stephens and Public Safety Chair Michael Gallagher on “hot potato” issues and take full responsibility for the office, regardless of who exactly he’s seeking permission from.
