Cuyahoga County Executive Chris Ronayne is considering allowing in-person visitation at the county jail after years of doing virtual visits. The move comes after a report from a advocacy group comprised of public defenders.
Published: Aug. 01, 2024, 9:29 a.m.The Cuyahoga County Jail is comprised of two parts: the older Jail I built in 1976, and the newer Jail 2 built in 1995.
The county jail ended in-person visitation for inmates’ loved ones in early 2020 and has replaced it with video conferencing. The county’s statement did not address all of the Wren Collective’s criticisms, namely prosecutors having warrantless access to video and phone conversations involving inmates.
Family members also can help defendants assemble evidence in their favor, such as mental health records, records of abuse and substance abuse issues, according to the report. Family members can also find witnesses and reach out to defense attorneys.“This report was written by a former public defender, so, its conclusions are not surprising,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley in a statement. “It has been well-established that jail calls are public records.
“We was tussling, he reached for the gun, he fell and then pow,” McLoyd said in a recorded call. A jury convicted her, and she is serving a life sentence in a Dayton prison.
