The consortium led by the Cubs’ Ricketts family have withdrawn their bid to take over Premier League club Chelsea FC.

The backlash resulted in a social media campaign where the hashtag #NoToRicketts was trending on Twitter. It also led to protests outside of Stamford Bridge prior to the club’s game against Brentford back on April 2.

During the bidding process, the Ricketts met with stakeholders to address concerns stemming from the controversy.that the outcry from Chelsea supporters did not play a part in deciding not to make a final bid, rather they simply could not come to an agreement on the terms of a final proposal. It is worth remembering Chelsea was put up for sale by current owner Roman Abramovich amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Abramovich would soon after be sanctioned by the U.K government in response to his ties to Vladimir Putin.

With the Ricketts now out of the running, the remaining bids include consortiums led by part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers Todd Boehly, Sir Martin Broughton and Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca.
