The city of Mobile might have staged a groundbreaking last week for an Amtrak stop downtown, but that doesn’t mean people will be riding the riding the train anytime soon.

Before work can even start on the train platform and a sidetrack where the train will park overnight, utilities at the site next to the Arthur Outlaw Mobile Convention Center have to be located. That is a tricky process, and it is up to CSX. Christina Bottomley, the company’s vice president of business development and real estate, told FOX10 News that the railroad wants to get that done as soon as possible. But she added that it is premature to offer a timeline.
“Our group is looking at it,” she said. “We did finalize the agreement, which is very exciting, but we’re continuing to work with Amtrak. I will tell you, we’re going as fast as we can, and we’ll have more coming up in the future on that.” Amtrak is aiming to start the service sometime next year. Two trains each day will leave Mobile for New Orleans, with four stops in Mississippi.
