The original anime had only adapted 185 chapters of the manga before ending its anime run in 2001, while the remake anime had adapted close to 339 chapters of the manga. Due to Togashi's health, breaks have often been taken. This meant the 1999 anime's path to adapting the manga was always going to be perilous, making the 2011 anime necessary. One of the biggest additions to the 2011 anime that the original 1999 anime did not have is the Chimera Ant Arc, which many manga readers, alongside anime watchers, have considered not just the best arc in Hunter x Hunter, but in the entire shōnen genre as a whole.
