The fated blue screen of death returned to many users' screens today when Austin-based Crowdstrike experienced an outage.
Businesses returned to work Friday morning to discover that their Microsoft Windows computers were inoperable for hours due to an update.

Crowdstrike is a popular cybersecurity software company that develops software to protect against hacks. The company’s systems are used by some of the biggest companies in the world including Fortune 500 titans like Target, Salesforce, and T-Mobile.and hospitals. Many are recovering and have resumed operations after the tech issues, but some are still struggling to recover.“It wasn’t a cyberattack,” Kurtz said.
“When you look at the complexity of cybersecurity, you’re always trying to stay one step ahead of the adversaries,” said Kurtz. “In this particular case, our systems are always looking for the latest attacks from these adversaries that are out there. So this content update went out and as it does, and it’s been doing for many years, obviously we’ve got a robust team that’s looking at the safety and security of these updates.
“When you look at software it’s a complex world,” Kurtz said. “These sort of things, you try to understand and mitigate them and in some cases, you have a weird interaction. We’re just trying to sort out where that negative interaction was and we’re focused on getting customers back up and running.”CrowdStrike update cause Microsoft outage to hit airlines, government office, restaurants, banks and more across the world.
