A Mapleton Elementary crossing guard was hospitalized after a driver failed to see her with her stop sign elevated above her head. The driver was traveling east on Maple Street at 8:45 a.m. Monday when they failed to see the crossing guard in her marked crosswalk, Mapleton police said. As the driver passed through the intersection, the right-side mirror hit the crossing guard, knocking her over onto the pavement.No other people were in the crosswalk at that time, police said.
The crossing guard was evaluated and transported to the hospital by the Mapleton City Fire Department.The driver is reportedly being cooperative with investigators and has been issued a citation for failing to yield to a crossing guard.
