Pat Cummins and his victorious Australians have been fined by the ICC in the wake of the epic first Ashes Test, with England’s players also penalised. 7NEWS
ICC match referee Andy Pycroft ruled both teams were two overs short of their targets after time allowances. On top of the players’ financial sanction, Australia and England have been docked two World Test Championship points - one for each over short - to kick off the new two-year cycle.
That was enough to drop them out of the top two on the ladder and they were forced to watch from home as New Zealand became the inaugural World Test Champions. Stokes called his side in late on day one, with England flying on 8-393 and Joe Root in overdrive after reaching a glorious hundred - with opposing captain Pat Cummins among many to say they would not have done the same. The home side didn’t pick up any wickets in the final 20 minutes and relinquished the chance to flog a weary Australia attack for cheap runs.
“I don’t think any batter likes to go out 20 minutes before the close of play. The way in which we played, and took Australia on, actually allowed us to be able to do that.
